A resident of Pocopson for nearly 10 years — and nearly 11 years total in Chester County, Mike McGann has been active in the community, both in local sports programs as well as in local politics.

Mike has served as a coach for baseball and basketball for the Unionville Recreation Association and coached football for the Kennett Area YMCA as well as serving as a local regional leader of the Democratic Party in Chester County, and one of Pocopson’s Democratic Committee Members from 2002 to 2005. He ran as a write-in for Township Supervisor in 2001 (getting on the ballot for a second run in 2007), managed campaigns for other candidates in 2002, 2003 and 2007 and ran for State Representative in 2004.

Professionally, Mike was an award-winning reporter, winning honors for his investigative work as well as his in-depth coverage of local government in New Jersey. Over the last 25 years, Mike has attended hundreds of different governmental meetings in various states, offering a much broader perspective and an exposure to new and different ideas far beyond the typical local candidate.

After his newspaper reporting days were over, Mike moved into editorial management for various magazine publishers including Primedia, Peterson, EMAP, CurtoCo/Freedom and North American Publishing. He managed budgets in excess of $5 million, with line-item and profit and loss responsibilities, answering to corporate management. After leaving the corporate world to stay home with his newborn twins in 2001, he started a very successful career as a freelance writer, working for various national publications. In 2005, the entrepreneurial bug bit again, and Mike served as the founding general managing partner of Gotham Sports Media, which publishes Gotham Baseball magazine — for which Mike also served as founding editor. Gotham Baseball won Amazon.com’s award for best new sports publication of 2005. In 2006, sensing the changes in the new economy and the publishing business, Mike decided to sell off his print company to concentrate solely on Internet work. Currently, he owns and operates Brandywine New Media LLC, the owner of a number of successful enthusiast Web sites in the sports, technology and political genres. He also consults on marketing, message and content issues with various entities.

Married to Stephanie, a dentist with a practice in nearby Concordville, they have twins, Janet and Kenny, who are students at Pocopson Elementary School. Mike is proud to have two stepsons, Eddy and Greg, both graduates of Unionville High School. Eddy, who holds office with both the National Young Democrats of America and the College Democrats of America and is fresh off a stint working as a field organizer for the Obama Campaign in Chester County, is a junior at the University of Vermont.
